PC Tune-up

Sometimes your printer can go clueless! A simple issue such as no paper in the tray can cause a catastrophe! Assuming that you use HP printers as they are very reliable even in the most demanding of environments, some issues that can creep up while using them are:

Fade print
If you are using a HP printer, then a fade print occurs when your printer is low on toner, the Economode printing setting is turned ON or the print density is set to low.
Try turning off the last two settings and see if the print comes alright. Else, remove the cartridge and shake it well in order to redistribute the toner more evenly. If this also doesn’t work, you will need to replace the cartridge.

Printer is not printing from the expected paper tray
To resolve this flaw, check your printing PC and the printer. On your printing PC, check if the application is set to print from the wrong paper tray while on the printer’s end ensure that the paper sizes in the control panel match what is actually in the paper trays.

Paper Jams
Paper jams are invariably the most common problems with any kind of printer. This happens when your printer is not periodically clean, the rollers on the printer that feed the paper through its pathway are worn down or the wrong paper type is being used. In case the printer’s roller is damaged, you will need to replace the damaged one. Also, while removing the paper from the paper jam remember to always pull the paper in the direction of the paper path, because pulling it backwards can severely damage the printer.

Toner does not stay on the paper or smears
While taking out a print on a paper if words and images come off when a hand is run across them, there are a few possible problems such as the toner cartridge may be defective and letting too much toner out at one time, the fuser assembly may be damaged or is ending or some toner may have spilled in the printer. You will need to replace the toner cartridge or the fuser assembly. If the toner has spilled in the printer, you will need to clean it out.

50.4 error message
Latest models of HP LaserJet printers display this error message. This message indicates a problem with the power supply. If the printer is connected to a UPS try disconnecting it, or disconnect it from a power strip and plug it directly into a wall outlet. A laser printer should never be plugged into a UPS. Also, ensure that all of the components in the printer are seated properly.

Ghosting
Ghosting is a condition where the image prints properly, but a much lighter copy of the image also prints elsewhere. When there is a problem with the power outlet that is supplying power to the printer, ghosting happens. You need to check the power outlet by plugging in a different printer to see if the same results occur. On the other hand, Ghosting can also be caused when consumable printer parts such as the imaging kit or drum are near exhaustion. All of the consumable parts in a printer are rated for a certain number of pages. You need to replace these parts if they are near end.

Printer picks up all the paper from the manual feed tray rather than one sheet
This happens when the pad that is responsible for separating the paper is worn out and needs to be replaced. Another instance where this happens is when the paper is wet due to humidity. Before putting your paper into the printer, make sure that the paper is properly stored and it is fanned properly.

Driver Issues
Drivers are programs that facilitate communication between your operating system and the printer. As new operating systems are released, new drivers will need to be loaded for your existing printers. Drivers are hardware dependent and operating system specific programs. Not all printers have a driver for every OS. For installing the correct drivers, it is best to consult the printer manual and find out what printers the drivers will support.
